Episode 4 - Departure
In the novel, Ugachi attempted to warn the other goblins to protect the fires when he noticed what Eugeo and Kirito were planning.
After the fires were doused, the goblins reacted to Eugeo's glowing grass before Kirito managed to provide him with a sword in the novel. Additionally, Kirito, rather than Eugeo, was the one who realised that the goblins disliked the glowing grass and he gave Eugeo a sword directly to his hands while the goblins were distracted, before instructing the boy on their further course of action.
In the novel, Kirito did not encounter any goblin henchmen when he charged towards Ugachi after retrieving a sword. Additionally, Ugachi was attempting to protect his eyes from the light of Eugeo's grass at that moment.
The choreography of the battle between Kirito and Ugachi did not follow the description of the novel. Kirito was unable to pierce through the goblin's armour and only barely managed to avoid some of Ugachi's attacks.
Kirito was unaware of the existence of Sword Skills in Underworld before his battle with Ugachi. Instead, he accidentally triggered one while subconsciously attempting to reproduce the movements of the skill manually in an attempt to chain multiple attacks to overpower the goblin.
Kirito's musings about pain after suffering his first injury from Ugachi were greatly simplified in the anime.
During the fight between Kirito and Ugachi, the sequence of events from Kirito rising to his feet after being injured by the goblin until he was kicked to the ground again were anime-original. In the novel, Kirito was unable to rise to his feet until Eugeo intervened, due to being paralysed by fear.
The scene of Eugeo overcoming his fear to come to Kirito's aid was anime-original.
The choreography of Eugeo's battle against Ugachi did not follow the description of the novel. In the novel, Eugeo assaulted the goblin with a series of fast swings, while Ugachi focused on defence, enjoying the resistance of his prey. However, due to Eugeo's predictable rhythm, Ugachi tripped the boy by hitting his support leg, creating an opening for his fatal slash. Additionally, Eugeo did not use his glowing grass during the battle.
In the novel, Eugeo attempted to rise to his feet after being struck by Ugachi, despite having suffered a lethal injury.
The sequence of events in Kirito's final confrontation with Ugachi was different from the novel. In the novel, Kirito severed Ugachi's other arm before the goblin remarked about Kirito being an Ium. At that point, Kirito was able to sever the goblin's head with Sonic Leap with little resistance.
In the novel, a goblin named Aburi responded to Kirito's challenge after Ugachi's death; however, Kirito disposed of the goblin with another Sonic Leap before it could even finish its taunt.
In the novel, when Kirito checked Eugeo's status window, his Durability was decreasing at a rate of one point every two seconds. This decrease was accelerated in the anime for dramatic effect.
During the scene where Kirito came to Selka, he awoke her by shaking her shoulders, rather than calling her name from a distance, in the novel. Additionally, Selka did not immediately recognise the boy and attempted to push him aside due to mistaking him for a goblin.
In the novel, Kirito lifted Selka to bring her to Eugeo when the girl was about to begin to weep in
The mention regarding the villagers' reactions upon Kirito, Eugeo and Selka's return, as well as their shock upon seeing Ugachi's severed head, was omitted.

In the novel, Kirito already knew about Alice's Sacred Task when he asked Eugeo about it.
During the conversation at the Gigas Cedar scene, the anime omitted mentions of: Sister Azariya having been reluctant to take a new apprentice after Alice was apprehended by an Integrity Knight; Eugeo's remarks about Selka being a timid girl before Alice was apprehended, and that the villagers were now all expecting Selka to be as gifted as Alice, causing her to move to the church to work even harder than Alice to meet the expectations.

In the novel, Eugeo listed several other issues before mentioning the goblins.
Eugeo's explanation on how Durability mechanics worked in the world were omitted.
Kirito's contemplation on what would happen if he were to die in Underworld, and his decision to refrain from using death as a way to return to the real world unless it was his last resort, were omitted.

In the novel, Eugeo did not give a clear reason why he had retrieved the Blue Rose Sword from the cave. Additionally, Eugeo did not offer Kirito to attempt to swing the sword.
Kirito's attempt at using the Horizontal Sword Skill from SAO did not cause the Blue Rose Sword to glow in the novel.
Kirito's musings about pain in Underworld being unlike the pain in the games he had played, as games used a Pain Absorber system, were omitted.
The anime did not mention that Kirito had been bathing with four other boys before they left the bath early, and that Selka and Sister Azariya had already had their bath.
During the bathing scene, Kirito thought about Asuna and his family being worried about his disappearance, the irregularity of his presence in Underworld with memories of the real world, and his desire to make his way through the world without a guidebook in the novel version of the story, rather than about the Axiom Church, the Taboo Index, and Alice.
The scene of Selka offering Kirito some well water before their conversation at his room began was omitted.
In the novel, when Kirito asked Selka about her sister, the girl attempted to pretend she did not actually have a sister, before Kirito informed her that he had heard about Alice from Eugeo. Additionally, Selka revealed that she had believed that Eugeo had forgotten about her sister, just like all the other villagers pretending that she had never existed.
During the conversation with Selka, Kirito's thoughts about Eugeo and his decision to help the boy find Alice were omitted.
In the novel, Kirito's remark about Selka liking Eugeo came when he saw her dejection after he mentioned that Eugeo still cared a lot about Alice, rather than after Selka described Eugeo as being alone.
The anime omitted Kirito's speculations on Selka's whereabouts in his conversation with Sister Azariya.
Eugeo's concern that Selka would try to pursue Alice if she knew why Alice was arrested by Deusolbert Synthesis Seven, which was why he had been reluctant to tell the girl about her sister's crime, was omitted.
Like in Alicization Episode 01, the System Call for generating a light source was changed from "Lit Small Rod" into "Generate Luminous Element. Adhere."
Kirito enquired about being able to cast Sacred Arts himself when he saw Eugeo using it to create a light source in the novel.
In the novel, the scene where Kirito shared his plan on how to prevent Selka's arrest if she were to break the Taboo Index took place before the two boys had reached the cave, rather than inside it. Additionally, Eugeo also mentioned Selka's Sacred Task would prevent her from proceeding with such a plan, as well as the fact that Selka would not be able to break a clause from the Taboo Index in the first place, unlike her sister.
In the novel, Eugeo and Kirito heard a strange sound and smelled a fire burning before they heard Selka's scream.
In the novel, the goblins were alerted to Eugeo and Kirito's presence when the nearest goblin happened to notice the two, rather because of Eugeo's shout. Additionally, Kirito made eye contact with the goblin, which allowed him to realise, to his terror, that the goblins possessed Fluctlights as well.

Despite PoH having an orange cursor, he was somehow able to watch the duel between Kirito and Kuradeel in the safe area of Kamdet. This is possibly a developer oversight, though it's also likely that PoH cleared his "Orange Player" status after Laughing Coffin's collapse, as indicated possible in The Black Swordsman.
Episode 7 - The Temperature of the Heart

In the novel, Lisbeth hired a NPC to watch the shop while she and Kirito went to get the ingot from the Frost Dragon. The NPC is not mentioned nor seen in the anime.
In the novel, the ingot was only obtainable after starting a quest and one of the popular speculation about the requirement to obtain the crystal was that a master smith was required to be part of the party for the crystal to drop. In the anime, this speculation is treated as a fact and is rephrased to that the item would only spawn with a master smith nearby. The activation part of the quest was completely excluded: listening to a village elder and picking up the mention of a crystal-eating dragon in the NPC's life story.
In the novel, Kirito gave Lisbeth his coat while they were still in the hamlet where they had to accept the quest. In the anime, as the hamlet part was omitted, he gives her the coat while climbing the mountain.
In the novel, Kirito and Lisbeth actually peer down the pitfall-trap of a dragon nest before battling the dragon.
In the novel, Kirito used «Spinning Shield» to deflect the Frost Dragon's breath attack, while in the anime, Kirito uses an unknown 1-hit Sword Skill, the execution of which is not shown.
In the novel, when Kirito and Lisbeth were falling into the nest, Kirito actually tried to stop their speed of descent by jamming his sword into the wall.
In the novel, before they went to sleep, Kirito and Lisbeth first ate soup and then Kirito told Lisbeth about some of his adventures. This is omitted in the anime.
In the novel, when Lisbeth woke up, Kirito was making tea and Kirito thought of the idea of digging the ground while they were chatting.
In the novel, Kirito rather escaped the nest by holding onto the Frost Dragon's tail, not by using Elucidator as a handhold as the dragon sailed out of its nest.
Although the monster Frost Bone is mentioned in the novel, they do not appear in the anime.
In the novel, Lisbeth does not hint that they left Kirito's sleeping bags and lantern in the dragon's nest. Kirito brushes it aside, saying that they left it there for the other players that would fall inside.
In the novel, after giving Kirito the Dark Repusler, Lisbeth asked why Kirito needed a second sword with similar stats to his Elucidator, and he replied by showing her his «Dual Blades» skill and requested her to keep it a secret. This is omitted in the anime.
In the novel, Lisbeth takes Asuna to a small sidewalk cafe to chat, instead of doing so within her shop, after Asuna asks whether Kirito had said anything rude.
In the anime, when Kirito chases after Lisbeth from the shop, he doesn't mention about his guilt experience with his former guild, the «Moonlit Black Cats», while comforting her with gratitude.
Episode 6 - Illusionary Avenger
In the LN, Asuna and Kirito go over to the 20th Floor in an attempt to ambush Grimlock at an NPC restaurant that he apparently likes, but in the anime, they just sit on a bench to have dinner.
In the LN, Schmitt was asked to write down the names of all Golden Apple members and he gives the parchment with the names to Kirito. While waiting for Grimlock on the 20th Floor, Kirito reads the parchment and notices that Caynz's name is romanized as Caynz, instead of Kains, which clues him in that the murder was a hoax. In the anime however, Kirito deduces the truth through his sharp intuition after seeing his sandwich burst due to hitting the ground with low durability.
Schmitt's past is not revealed in the anime. In the novel, it states that he was a sportsman.
The Algade House does not appear in the anime, and so Heathcliff does not make an appearance. In the novel, Kirito and Asuna meet with him and ask him if murders in safe areas were possible. In the anime, Kirito makes his own conclusions while walking around Marten.
In the novel, Kirito took several precautions in case he would be attacked by the Laughing Coffin members by drinking an anti-poison potion and having multiple healing crystals on him. In the anime, this is omitted.
Schmitt's paralysis status seems to wear off after the Laughing Coffin members leave in the anime. In the novel, Kirito gives Schmitt an anti-poison potion instead.
In the anime, after the ghost talks to Schmitt, the latter looks around and finds a rabbit, before turning around to see the "ghost". In the novel, Schmitt sees the "ghost" after the "ghost" talks to him.
Kirito does not mention that Caynz had a second teleportation crystal to pretend as if he was dying in the anime. In the novel, he mentions that he must have stabbed himself outside the safe area, and teleported back into the city to look as if someone had killed him.
In the anime, when Kirito chases the Laughing Coffin away, he states that he has reinforcements arriving soon. In the novel, after they leave he sends a message to Klein stating that they got away.
The dialogue between the Laughing Coffin members and Kirito is much shorter in the anime than the one in the Light Novel. When Kirito comes to rescue Yolko, Caynz and Schmitt, the leader, PoH, does not recognize Kirito in the anime, but in the novel, PoH remembers Kirito and that they had met somewhere before.
In the Light Novel, XaXa told Kirito that he would chase him by riding a horse. In the anime, XaXa did not say anything to Kirito.
The Laughing Coffin members do not seem to recognize Schmitt as the leader/sub-leader of the DDA in the anime. Instead, they call him a "bigshot" due to his membership in the DDA.
In the LN, Grimlock denied his guilt of having Griselda murdered at first, saying that Griselda must have tried the ring on which is why he did not receive the ring himself after she was killed and only admitted his guilt after Yolko unearthed an «Eternal Storage Trinket» with Griselda's Seal of the guild leader and her marriage rings, proving that Griselda could not have tried the ring on.
Though the Light Novel depicts Kirito in his Blackwyrm Coat, the anime seems to show him in a different, unnamed coat.
Episode 5 - Murder in the Safe Zone
Asuna and Kirito's argument at the beginning of the episode originally came from the first material edition and ended in a duel between the two, which Kirito barely won by using a feint of seemingly dual wielding. Eventually, the Geocrawler field boss was killed by playing a lullaby to make it fall asleep, instead of sacrificing the NPCs of the town.
In the novel, the events of the Murder Case began on April 22, 2024, while in the anime it was April 11, 2024.
In the light novel, Kirito, Asuna and Agil journey to the 1st Floor, where they confirm the death of the victim via the «Monument of Life» (which is later revealed to be a player whose name is similar in pronunciation to the alleged victim).
In the light novel, Asuna was wearing casual clothes tailored by Ashley in the inn, before changing into her guild attire after Kirito complimented her looks too late.
In the novel, Schmitt was the one who requested a meeting with Yolko, while in the anime, Yolko requests for a meeting with Schmitt.
Asuna and Kirito's meal and conversation with Heathcliff is omitted in the anime.
In the light novel, the Guilty Thorn was taken by Schmitt of the Divine Dragon Alliance from Kirito on the 48th Floor when Kirito was on his way to his accommodation at the time there, instead of being left with Agil for safekeeping.
In the light novel, Kirito goes outside the Area and uses a throwing pick to test whether it is possible for piercing damage to harm a player within the Area and Asuna does not stop him from testing it, while in the anime he tries to do it with the Guilty Thorn at Agil's shop and he is stopped by Asuna.
Though the Light Novel depicts Kirito in his Blackwyrm Coat and Asuna in her KoB uniform, the anime depicts them in different equipment.
Episode 4 - The Black Swordsman
In the light novel, three Drunk Apes appear, however Silica was dealing with two of them before a third one appeared. In the anime, the three apes simply surround her, with no surprise attacks.
When Pina was killed in the light novel, Silica became enraged and defeated the ape responsible for Pina's death. She was also about to engage the other two apes in a suicidal charge when Kirito appeared and swiftly killed the two apes. In the anime, Pina's death sent Silica into a state of shock, which almost resulted in her being killed by the apes, but Kirito was able to save her.
Though the light novel depicts Kirito in his Blackwyrm Coat, the anime showed him in a different, unnamed coat.
The scene involving Silica in the Inn room is altered in the anime. In the novel, Silica visits Kirito's room and falls asleep on his bed, resulting in Kirito sleeping on the floor. This happens again to him at the beginning of the Fairy Dance story arc, when Suguha falls asleep in his bed, reinforcing Kirito's impression that Silica reminds him of her.
Due to this alteration, Silica and Kirito sleep in separate rooms in the anime, as opposed to sleeping in the same room in the novel.
In the light novel, ten Titan's Hand members revealed themselves, but only nine attacked Kirito, as one member was the guild's eavesdropper and thus needed a green cursor. In the anime, only seven players reveal themselves and attack him, including the eavesdropper.
In the light novel, after the orange players stopped attacking Kirito, they made confused faces until Rosalia ordered them to continue their attack, which they did. In the anime, the orange players were exhausted after attacking Kirito and did not continue attacking him even when Rosalia told them to.
In the light novel, Kirito warned the orange players that if they did not go through the portal, he would paralyze all of them with a knife coated with level 5 poison. The conversation nor the dagger is not mentioned in the anime.
The scene where Kirito opens a portal and jails the Titan's Hand guild members is omitted in the anime.
In the anime, Rosalia did not carry a teleport crystal.
In the light novel, while Kirito throws Rosalia into the portal, she attempted to plead to him for mercy and even attempted to persuade him to join forces with her.
Episode 3 - The Red-Nosed Reindeer
The anime did not show that Klein met Kirito while he was training and that they talked about the Christmas event.
In the anime, Klein and his group were shown fighting off a group of Blood Wolf Leaders on the 28th Floor before the death of the Moonlit Black Cats, whereas in the novel they were training against an ant-like monster on the 46th Floor just five days away from the Christmas event.
Argo does not make an appearance in the light novel, but was mentioned by Klein during their conversation.
The initial story of how Kirito met up with the Black Cats is not portrayed in the anime.
In the novel, Sachi was using a cloak that granted invisibility when Kirito found her.
There was no mention of the shared inventory window between Kirito and Sachi in the anime.
In the light novel, it was stated that Klein negotiated with the Divine Dragon Alliance to have a 1-on-1 duel between him and a member of the Alliance to decide their next course of action. Because of this, only Klein was tired after the match, but in the anime it looks as if everyone in the Fuurinkazan guild fought against the DDA guild.
In the anime, it was not revealed how Kirito got out of the trap alive. In the light novel, Kirito destroyed the treasure chest, thus disabling the trap.
In the light novel, Sachi left the message record crystal in a shared inventory tab between her and Kirito with the timer-activation mode active, instead of a time-triggered mail.
In the light novel, Sachi actually sang the "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", instead of humming it.
Sachi did not mention a friend of hers that died on the way back to town in her message to Kirito in the anime.
Episode 2 - Beater
The First Day side story was skipped entirely.
Kirito originally met Asuna at the 18th level of the 1st Floor Labyrinth.
Asuna’s past life before borrowing her brother’s console to play the game was omitted, as well as her one month character development from a kidnapped damsel in distress to a near-suicidal player who constantly ground her levels.
«Argo the Rat» was not introduced and the fact that she was the second player on Kirito’s friend list and the publisher of the SAO guide books was omitted.
The meeting for the boss raid took place after Kirito had lunch with Asuna in the light novel.
The anime did not include Kirito's monologues about the danger of being known as a Beta Player; their life will be targeted as the one who helps release the death game. Also hurting other players is possible outside the safe boundary of the town and city.
Asuna actually regained her desire for life after speaking to Kirito; who frequently taught her the beauty of the virtual world.
The anime omitted Asuna's request to Kirito to use the bathroom in Kirito's rented farmhouse lodgings and subsequent bath and reflection, as well as Argo's visit to update Kirito on her client's offer on his Anneal Blade, which ended in her discovery of Asuna in the bath.
Although the description in the novel states that Illfang the Kobold Lord was supposed to be covered in blue fur, both the light novel illustrations and the anime portrayed him with red fur.
In the novel, Diavel did not aim for the Last Attack bonus by himself. His whole group was greatly damaged by one of Illfang's Sword Skills, before the boss started singling Diavel out.
Several Sword Skills were omitted from the anime, including Kirito's Slant and Horizontal. Additionally, it was not shown that the boss used Hiōgi to kill Diavel, but it is shown when Illfang attempts to use the skill on Asuna and Kirito. «Tsumujiguruma» use against Diavel's party was also not shown, though the skill is shown later in battle, just before Kirito activates «Sonic Leap».
In the novel, Kirito was one meter away from Diavel when he died and Kirito's conversation with Diavel was actually Kirito's inner-monologue. Diavel only managed to say an incomplete sentence to Kirito about defeating the boss before he shattered into polygons.
Kirito trying to give a potion to Diavel was not part of the original story, as Kirito was too far away from Diavel to offer him a potion.
In the anime, Kirito was shown to deflect several of Illfang's strikes with regular sword slashes, while in the novel, he used «Vertical» and «Horizontal» Sword Skills to do so and even then he had to boost the system assist for the skills to successfully deflect the powerful blows.
In the novel, Kirito was sent flying through the room when he got hit with «Gengetsu» and was barely able to stand on his knees, while Asuna charged for the boss in his place. In the anime, he landed on Asuna and they both fell to the ground.
In the novel, Kirito took five minutes to recover, until the boss's health reached below 30% and one of the tanks tripped, to register his state as "being surrounded", causing the boss to initiate «Tsumujiguruma». In the anime, the tanks were shortly overpowered by Illfang, who then activated the skill without a tank stumbling behind him.
In the novel, Kibaou reacted to Diavel's fate only after the latter had died.
In the anime Diavel was portrayed as a selfless «Beta Tester» who looked out for everyone, while in the novel, he tried to buy off Kirito's sword, so that the latter would have a harder time in getting a Last Attack on the boss.
In the light novel, Asuna voluntarily removed her hooded cloak herself, helping to recapture everyone's morale after their leader's death, before charging at the boss, instead of the cloak being removed by Illfang's attack.
There was no mention of Kirito's habit of Last Attacking the boss.
There was no mention of Diavel and Kibaou being cohorts. Kibaou had tried to purchase Kirito’s «Anneal Blade +6» at an outrageous price in the novel.
There was no demonstration of Kirito’s leadership as he directs the seven raiding parties against the boss’s actions.
It was originally a player of Diavel’s group, named Lind, who accused Kirito of allowing Diavel's death by withholding information in the novel, rather than Kibaou.
In the novel, the "Beater" term was derived from the overlapping voices crying "Beta Tester" and "Cheater." In the anime, a single voice created the portmanteau.
There was no display of the in-game messaging feature, which players can use to send and receive messages to their known acquaintances.
The opening scenery of the 2nd Floor was not shown, thus the event where Asuna asks Kirito how he knew her name was shown while they were still on the stairs.
Season 1
Episode 1 - The World of Swords
The anime did not mention that the release of the SAO game was still limited to Japan, and not yet allowed global.
Kirito's explanation to Klein on how the players' inability to log out would not reflect well on Argus and the VRMMORPG genre was omitted.
In the anime, the players were just wondering what happened when they were teleported back to the city. In the novel, a few were angry when they were teleported back.
In the novel, Kayaba Akihiko announced to the players that the NerveGear would fry the player's brain, killing them in the real world, if any of the following occurred: being disconnected from a source of electricity for ten minutes, cut from the system for more than two hours, or dying in-game. He also informed the players that his crime was being broadcast all over the world, with the location of each player disclosed, thus the authorities would be moving them into hospitals to put them in better care during the two hours he had allowed the players to be disconnected from the system. In the anime, he only informed the players that upon reaching zero hit points, the player would die. Akihiko does not mention anything about moving the players into hospitals during his "tutorial", although it is shown later on that he did spread the word to put the players into better care.
In the novel, there was no invisible barrier preventing the players from leaving the plaza until the end of the tutorial.
Kirito, in the novel, had reached the 10th Floor during the beta testing period rather than the 8th Floor as mentioned in the anime. However, originally the number of floors passed was six, and the number was later retconned to ten in the Progressive novel, thus this is more of a change in continuity, than an error in the anime.
In the novel, the players' mass panic occurred immediately after Akihiko's disappearance. In the anime, their hysteria was delayed until triggered by Silica's frightened reaction, who was not shown in the novel.
The design of the Monument of Life had been simplified in the anime. Unlike the novel version, the anime version did not include descriptions of each player's death.
