Toaru Kagaku no Railgun Chapter 97-103 Review

Chapter 097: While taking a stroll around Academy City, Ruiko and Kazari talk about some urban legends, including the story of a talking Golden Retriever stopping an attempted suicide and the story of three Child Errors (Flower Chomper Lahay Guillot, Feigned Innocence Emako and Sweet Tooth Siegtogo) who were abducted and experimented by a mad scientist. They later entered a small archway, rumored to ruin the romantic relationships of anyone who pass under it, and spent time on a manmade reservoir that was said to have sheltered a mutated giant serpent. Their conversation soon took the attention of two girls, one of which claimed that she saw a serpent not too long ago. However, her poor attempt to photograph the beast aroused suspicion from Kazari.

After leaving the reservoir, Ruiko took the chance to thank Kazari for letting her see various urban legend sites in Academy City, and admits that she had been in a dismal mood after the sudden disappearance of a friend that she just recently met. Kazari refuses to promise Ruiko that she will not disappear like her other friend, but she assures Ruiko that she will not disappear if Ruiko would stop feeling so depressed.

Ruiko, with her spirits lifted by Kazari's words, soon finds a flustered Mikoto among the crowd. According to Mikoto, "a friend" was baffled about a certain other person's tendency to meddle with the former's affairs and sacrifice itself for others and that "friend" realized having a "special kind of feeling" towards the other person. While Mikoto mulls over the fact that the "other person" seemed to like "symbols of motherhood", Kazari tells Mikoto that the only way for her "friend" to receive the feelings of the "other person" is to be exposed to something tragic and to stay in such a state of tragedy. As a confused Mikoto listens to Kazari's advice, Ruiko desperately tries to keep Mikoto from being misled by Kazari's advice.

Chapter 098: Mikoto, Kuroko, Saten and Uiharu find themselves with many other participants in front of what was announced to be Academy City's second juvenile hall. Director Kyougoku, who owns a private security business, decided to open the second juvenile hall in response to a rise in crimes committed by espers as opposed to those involving Skill Outs. Confident that a private firm would provide better service compared to Academy City's publicly-run juvenile hall, Director Kyougoku invites interested espers to test the security features of the newest reformatory—basically a jailbreak trial—by breaking into the facility, finding the target prisoner, and breaking out of the facility itself. The person who successfully extracted the prisoner from the facility will be rewarded with one billion yen.

Saten decided to join the competition for the handsome reward, but both Uiharu and Kuroko see the event as a way to show off the new facility's defense mechanisms. Regardless, Kuroko chose to join to watch over Mikoto's actions. Meanwhile, Mikoto wanted to participate for a change of pace. However, listening to Director Kyougoku boasting about the lack of capabilities of Tokiwadai's espers for the challenge has somehow urged Mikoto to join the jailbreak event.

Rating: 8/10

Chapter 099: The start of the jailbreak trial is finally announced. As the lead group decides to use the element of speed to conquer the initial hurdles, Mikoto, Kuroko, Uiharu and Saten choose to look over the floor plans of the reformatory and plan their next move. Eventually, they would see the reformatory's security drones use various suppression tools (like rubber shells, electric nets, etc.) to slowly whittle down the number of active participants. A group of thugs, who brought a heavily-modified car to act as a battering ram, would also find themselves on the receiving end of an acoustic weapon deployed near the main gate of the facility.

As more of the acoustic weapons are activated, a girl with the ability to amplify sound disables one of them using a shockwave created by her voice, but has to be rescued by a boy wearing a tanuki mascot head. Meanwhile, more participants are disqualified after falling into a sticky pitfall. Mikoto and the others manage to cross the pitfall by using Kuroko's teleport.

Elsewhere, Kouzaku Mitori, who chooses not to take on the security robots directly, uses a drone to attempt to open the main gate from the inside. However, she discovers that the ducts are also covered by the facility's security protocols, and she is quickly tracked down by one of the security robots. In time, Dolly reveals herself to rescue Mitori and uses a combination of "rails" created from her hair, her powers over electricity, and several screws to destroy the robot.

Rating: 9/10

Chapter 100-101: The usual gang when to try out the Jailbreak trial, some of their friends were within the group of people who were to take part in the trial. Saten like her usual self is trying way too hard to enter the buliding, at the same time the things that she did was kind of funny...

Rating: 8/10 (both chapters)

Chapter 102: Mitori and Dolly takes down one of the dog robots that with the image of director's head attached to it despite not having weapons, noting how creepy it is. All around the Juvenile Hall grounds, people attack and destroy whenever they see one, shocking the director, not comprehending that the robots are creepy. Aohoshi, the assistant director, remembers the time when the Director submitted the idea, and how it was approved because it was creepy in the first place. Nevertheless the competition goes on and Fusou Ayame does well for herself even without her powers, simply using resonance to defeat Type: Hunting Wasp robots, and helping someone because she is a hero. The person however betrays her and injects her with one of the Type: Hunting Wasps, knocking her out.

Back with Mikoto, Kuroko, and Saten, Saten is worried about Uiharu, to which Kuroko goes on a tirade about how weak Uiharu is. Hearing this, Mikoto and Saten uses reverse pyschology and suggests that Uiharu should just quit Judgment. Kuroko changes her tone pretty quickly and starts praising Uiharu only to realize Saten is recording her speech on the mobile phone. Kuroko reprimands Saten on why she doesn't drop the -san honorific for her name like she did for Uiharu when Saten asked her. Saten notes that she lost her nerve when she felt her "high-class Tokiwadai" aura. Meanwhile, Yakumaru is nearby observing all of this and wonders if they are flirting. All of a suddent, a Type: Giant Centipede robot attacks and restrains Saten. Yakumaru secretly goes into action and uses her chemicals to rust out the robot, though at the cost of also dissolving Saten's phone. The girls continue on, with Yakumaru helping them behind the scenes, though she realizes that she could just do the entire competition on her own if this was the case.

Meanwhile, in another part of the facility, the ninjas of the Kouga School get by using their ninjutsu, unaffected by the AIM Jammer. Tsurigane has apparently been caught once again by one of the facility's traps, this time by a spider robot. Seeing this, Shuri frees her but complains to Tsurigane that she will have to go back to training.

As for Mikoto and the others, they finally made it to the main building and notes how sturdy the doors were. However, they then notice that they made it to the Boys' Building instead of the designated Girls' Building.

Rating: 9/10

Chapter 103: Mikoto, Kuroko, and Saten (with Yakumaru close by) manage to find the Girls' Building instead, and notices that it has been unlocked and other people have already entered it. Mikoto notices something with the doors but thinks nothing of it after Kuroko calls her. Meanwhile, the girl with the long sleeves is being chased by mobile weapons but is rescued by the man in the tanuki mask, which he points out to her is a tanuki mask since she mistakes him for a bear. Meanwhile, with Mitori and Dolly, Mitori mentions something off with the jailbreak as it seems the facility is only focusing on one kind of security against them knowing there are multiple types of people who want to break out of jail. Mitori wonders where the guards are like in the previous Juvenile Hall where there guards in Powered Suits. Mitori tells Dolly to be careful but just then, they are approached by a Type: Giant Centipede robot.

Back with the Kouga School ninjas, they too have come across a Type: Giant Centipede robots and have managed to defeat them. Seeing how they could easily take down the building's defenses, Shuri orders her group to split in three: Sakata and Asai, Yasu and Tsurigane, and herself on her own, ordering them to gather information for the benefit of the Kouga. While walking along, she notices Misaka Mikoto and decides to follow her. She pretends to be a a little girl whose big sister took her to the trial and manages to convince the group to allow her to tag along, though Mikoto seems to notice something off. Shuri mentions that Mikoto is a the famous Level 5 Railgun and wonders if Kuroko and Saten are high level espers as well. Saten tries to pretend she is though she gives in and sadly states she is also a Level 0.

Now far off, Yakumaru notices Mikoto's group taking in Shuri and is annoyed by her as she would be more of a burden. Moreover, she notices that there is something off about her, in experience as someone who deceives people. Added to this, she also notes that there is also something off with the girl in the long sleeves as no girl naturally says "hawa hawa", and the guy in the tanuki mask is off too. Back with the two however, the boy reveals that the mask is based on a character in Win Win Sentai called Ponkichi-kun, and goes on to detail his character traits. Suddenly they are attacked by mobile weapons and as they are too many of them, he advises the girl to hide behind the corner. She however finds that she is being attacked by a camera with tasers. He rushes toward her to protect her but he is later shocked for his trouble by another camera. He falls, and the girl asks if Mr. Bear is alright, to which he once again corrects her to say that he is a Tanuki.
