Toaru Kagaku no Railgun Gaiden Astral Buddy Chapter 5.5-10 Review

Chapter 05.5: It's raining and the ghost girl is bored. She urges Junko to dress up but she refuses as it is against the rules. She complains to Junko that she is wasting her beautiful body and looks with the way she dresses, but Junko says it is fine as long as the Queen likes her the way she is, much to the girl's annoyance. Junko says that she's normal looking. Annoyed by this the Ghost Girl convinces her to wear a bit of make up, and possesses her a bit to help her. After the session, Junko slips up and mutters that she really might be beautiful, elating the Ghost Girl. But Junko gets annoyed by the Ghost Girl continually pressing her to say it aloud and let everyone see her and ends their little experiment.

At night when Junko is asleep, she takes control of her body and dresses her up, determined to have Junko admit that she is cute. And the only way for her to do that is to have the Queen tell her she is. In the Queen's second home, Misaki is failing to do some push-ups when she finds Junko in her balcony. In surprise, Junko, controlled by the Ghost girl, comes on to her strong and carries her to her bed. When Junko asks if she is cute to Misaki, she made the mistake of calling her by her first name instead of "Queen". Misaki quickly puts two and two together and threatens Junko for her mischief. Scared, the Ghost Girl takes Junko's body and quickly runs away. After she's gone, Misaki is flabbergasted by the events, though she was seriously contemplatng on giving Junko actual advice.

The next day, Junko is unaware of the events of last night, while the Ghost Girl is apologizing. Soon, Junko will be punished by the Queen for her mischief.

Chapter 06: With Shokuhou Misaki knocked out, Yumiya Iruka gloats about her victory while trying to control her excitement over the successful plan to capture Misaki. She, however, owes the success of her plan to her accomplice, who is certain about the connection between Misaki and the theory behind the Dream Ranker cards. For the meantime, the accomplice decides to ascertain Misaki's loss of consciousness while allowing Iruka to do her way with her.

Suddenly, Komaki appears as a member of Judgment to arrest Iruka and her accomplice for attacking Misaki. With Iruka's accomplice refusing to surrender, Komaki confronts the two with the use of her optical control ability. Immediately, Komaki's inexperience becomes evident with the accomplice managing to thwart Komaki's attacks despite the clear advantage, even breaking the naginata that Komaki is using. Eventually, despite her attempts to confuse the accomplice, Komaki receives a knee across her torso, while the accomplice berates her for not being able to apply the knowledge from Judgment training.

After remembering a failed virtual reality test she underwent with Kuroko and the advice she received from her colleague, Komaki decides to stall the movements of Iruka and her accomplice, convinced that "an unbreakable spirit" is her last resort. Responding to this, the accomplice decides to slowly break Komaki's arm to test her resolve.

Then, a spinning kick hurls back the accomplice away from Komaki. Hokaze Junko appears in response to Komaki's earlier contact, and decides to fight Iruka and her accomplice in Komaki's stead.

Chapter 07: Junko commends Komaki for her efforts. As she contemplates her opponents' goals, a kunai is suddenly thrown at her, and she dodges it. Out comes the girl in the spats charging toward her. She commends Junko's physical prowess and assumes that Junko's power strengthens her body though not enough it would seem for her. As they fight, the girl notes Junko is not using her full power and wonders if she is buying time for help to arrive or is afraid of destroying her enemy with her power. Junko doesn't answer however, forcing the girl to try and punch her. Junko however dodges every blow she tries to make, and with an opening Junko counters with a punch to the girl's face. Junko then tosses her, and as the girl lied on the ground, Junko tries to kick her. The girl however dodges and rolls out of the way and tries kicking Junko as well, which she dodges. The girl can only block Junko as she becomes relentless in her powerful attacks.

The girl admits the Junko is strong, while Junko wonders why her attacks are so light and wonders if the girl has a telekinesis in a lull in a battle. As their battle continues, Iruka, still tied up, can only admire Junko and her abilities. She, however, says even after all that Junko is still holding back, and that if Junko really did take things seriously, she would be unbeatable. As she says this, Iruka twists and moves her body enough for her to be able to get something from her pocket unbeknownst to Junko. Meanwhile, the girl in spats keeps on kicking and it keeps on missing. Junko continually dodges her attacks effortlessly, much to her chagrin. But she has a plan under her sleeves, liquids in a container to blind her, giving her enough time to inject Junko with the same thing that kept Misaki unconscious. She tosses the water into Junko's eyes and it successfully blinds her momentarily. However, as the girl moves in Junko gives the girl a headbutt. As the girl is stunned, Junko grabs the girls clothes and tosses her toward the tree, but then the girl uses her powers and lands on the tree on her feet and breaks it.

On her feet, the girl laughs as her face is bloody thanks to Junko's headbutt. Despite her injury, the girl is actually enjoying the fight she is having with Junko. She apologizes to Junko for underestimating her and that she will not hold back now and will seriously from now on.

Suddenly there is a powerful zap that comes between them. Iruka tells her accomplice to stop. The girl tells Iruka not to interrupt just when the fight was getting good. Iruka scolds her however, as they are out of time. Iruka shows off her laser pointer that she uses her powers on, making it last longer. She then points the laser pointer toward the still-unconscious Komaki, telling her that Junko could have taken the Queen already and ran away but didn't. Seeing the danger, Junko manages to save Komaki from Iruka's laser. But all is going according to plan, as Junko lands in a trap. Junko and Komaki are caught in a net with reinforced fibers. Iruka and her accomplice says it will buy them time as they can now escape with the Queen.

Iruka smiles, excited at Junko's expression. Iruka asks Junko to show her more of those "bright emotions", and to capture them after they have abducted her precious Queen. However, there is a condition, and that is Junko must come alone and threatens the Queen if she breaks the rules. Junko falls into despair and screams Misaki's name as Iruka and her accomplice leave with the Queen.

Sometime later, Misaki awakens from her Indian Poker card dream with fire in her eyes.

Cahpter 08: In her dreams, Misaki complains about being trapped by her captors, and angry at the researchers of Academy City doing evil deeds. The ghost girl, now with her face blackened, tells her that Misaki truly has a strong sense of justice. But Misaki says it isn't about justice and it is more about something personal. Misaki believes that the Indian Poker cards that remake people's minds are certainly connected to the Clone Dolly experiment and will certainly crush those who continue it.

But then the Ghost Girl shows a malicious smile, telling Misaki that she and those researchers are the same as she also toys with other people's minds just like them. Suddenly, the facade of the Ghost Girl breaks, and a naked Misaki before her. This Dark Misaki mocks Misaki's justification in taking responsibility for the lives of those she uses her powers on. Telling her how she still toys with the people who loved her, making her the same as those researchers, even though there is something wrong with those girls who let her use them. Misaki is angered by hers, telling the Dark Misaki not to mock those girls. The Dark Misaki then however changes topic, pointing out that she only ever gets mad for other people, and is holding her power back. She indicates that she always sacrifices her happiness for the sake of others, and distance herself from happiness. Dark Misaki wonders why if it is Misaki thinking she has no right to be happy, truly believe it is wrong to manipulate others, of if she really is pure. However, Dark Misaki concludes that she is rejecting all happiness in the hopes of a single miracle happening, for that person who can never again remember her.

Dark Misaki comes close to Misaki, goading her to become more selfish to take everything for herself before "that pesky girl" does. The Dark Misaki concludes that in the end, she is someone who sacrifices others to get what she wants, just like those scientists.

But then from above Ghost Girl arrives, calling out that Misaki is far kinder than anyone else. And from there, Ghost Girl has possessed Misaki and frees her from her nightmare. As Ghost Girl wakes up, she notes how difficult it is to control Misaki as if she has a natural resistance to being controlled. Ghost Girl wonders about Misaki's nightmare and the bad Misaki that was whispering in Misaki's ear. She wonder if it was an evil spirit, and it scares her.

Chapter 09: Junko relates the events Kobayashi Shimanaka and other members of the clique, that Misaki has been abducted and that she was challenged to get her back. The other clique members apologize for not being there on time as well as they also ran into the enemy and was delayed. They assume Komaki wasn't targeted like the other clique members because she was invisible. Shimanaka says that she would treat Junko's injuries, but then Junko starts lamenting her failure to save the Queen and leaving Komaki's efforts in vain.

But then Shimanaka slaps both of Junko's cheeks and reprimands her for thinking that way. She says that it isn't like Junko to act this way, and tells her that the Queen is still safe since she was told by the enemy to go after them. Shimanaka tells Junko that she should pull herself together. she is now the center of the Clique of the Queen of Tokiwadai. Shimanaka praises Junko for saving Komaki and that it's not time to give up.

Rubbing away her tears, Junko thanks Shimanaka and apologizes for how she acted. With that, Junko takes control of the clique and begins instructing the girls what they should do to get the Queen back by any means necessary.

While the girls do their duties, like searching for Misaki through searching the Bank and taking Komaki away to an ambulance, Junko recalls the time when she was competing with Yumiya Iruka, and that she has viewed Junko with hostility and wonders if she did anything to anger her in some way. Suddenly, Junko gets a call and finds out that it's the Queen, much to everyone's surprise. On the line, she finds out that it is actually the Ghost Girl taking possession. Junko asks where she is though she doesn't say anything useful, and later gropes Misaki's breasts after noticing them.

Junko later uses the GPS to track Misaki's phone down, and races to School District 10 where she is apparently being held.

Junko earlier explains away the Ghost Girl to the clique members, saying that she was able to find Misaki thanks to the avatar that Misaki made known as Ghost that she uses in emergencies. The other girls wonder if it was a laboratory in District 10, why Tokiwadai girls would risk their lives fighting Judgment, or if they are being mentally controlled. Anyway, not knowing anything other than the two girls have abducted Misaki, Shimanaka says that they will have to play it by the ear and prepare for anything. Shimanaka gives Junko a school bag, and tells her to rescue the Queen.

Back with the Ghost Girl, she stays put and does nothing reckless as instructed by Junko. She notes that Misaki's body is hard to control and can't even uses Misaki's powers. She tries to stand up but falls, taking down a box containing Indian Poker cards. Hearing the noise, Iruka and her accomplice coms into the room and finds nothing suspicious as the Ghost Girl goes back into position. The two argue on how the box could have fell, leading to each of them teasing the other during the previous battle. Iruka then says that the girl's bodysuit is too revealing of her bodylines. She asks where her track suit was, to which the girl says that it was too bloody and the zipper broke so she threw it away. Hearing this, Iruka says the girl is careless and calls her a mess looking at her. She wipes off the blood from her nose and then starts combing her hair.

With that the girl starts moving the boxes to prevent it from falling. Iruka asks what the girl intends to do with all the cards though she doesn't get a straight answer. Not questioning her further, Iruka crouches down to where Misaki's body is and touches her face, noting how not too long ago how "little" she was and wonders how she got her boobs. Iruka apologizes to Misaki for getting her involved but it was the only way to get Junko serious, and that she will release her once she completes her goal. Iruka however notices that the Indian Poker card on Misaki is not on her forehead, just as Iruka says she doesn't like Level 5s and kisses Misaki on her cheeks.

At that moment, Ghost Girl is pulled into a memory of a time long ago, and sees a young Junko meet a young Misaki, where the latter asks the former if head hurts.

Chapter 10: As Iruka's accomplice wonders how the card of Misaki's head could have fallen off, she reveals the true nature of the card on her hand. It is a card that uses the principles of the Indian Poker to transform the user's brain as a monster who is true to their desire, an evil hypnotism card. Though the girl doesn't really care for the technical stuff as she is merely fulfilling her duty. Meanwhile, the Ghost girl is sinking into a sea of memories wondering if it is still Misaki's.

Then the story unfolds to a memory of a time long ago. It is a young Iruka being hugged by a couple of girls as she enters a room. Suddenly, a phone's button is pressed and the girls are forced away from her. The girl that used her powers apologize to Iruka for their behavior as they are only looking forward to making new friends. They are introduced to each other and the girl's name is revealed to be Mitsuari Ayu. Ayu wonders where's the other visitor as she was told there would be two. At the threshold is a little girl with twintails crying out for Iruka. Iruka approaches and tries to console her. Ayu asks if she is her little sister, to which Iruka says that she is the younger sister while the crybaby, Yumiya Rakko, is the older one. Hearing their names, Ayu notes that she has an animal name as well, which in this case is an insect: an ant. Ayu then welcomes them to Ideal.

As the girls look around the facility, Iruka notices a girl in braids all alone: it is a young Hokaze Junko. She tries to introduce herself to Junko but she tells her not to come closer as she brings people harm. Suddenly, Junko is in pain and holds her head in pain, trying to calm down. She staggers and falls on the wall, cracking it. However, Junko is unhurt, remarking in dismay that she "did it again". Iruka is surprised by this, to which Ayu says that it happens all the time, much to Iruka's surprised. Iruka points out that Junko was holding her head, to which Ayu says that it was because Junko was the most affected by her powers, but because of it she was able to grow from a Level 2 to a Level 4 in only two months, a feat the teachers said they have never seen. It is the reason why, Ayu says, why everyone looks up to Hokaze Junko.

Meanwhile in the System Scan room, Junko punches a punching machine, and sends it flying to the wall behind it, cracking it from the impact. The researchers remark on how that the machine was built to survive impact from a large semi truck. One of them remarks that Junko's output may be that of a Level 5, which amazes Iruka. Ayu says that the facility is special since it actually raised a Level 5, though it's a secret. Ayu remarks how only the elite are allowed in this special education facility as it has the ability to create a Level 5. Ayu then says that if Iruka works hard here and she too can become a Level 5. Iruka then becomes excited after hearing this, believing that she can become like Junko someday.

Back with Junko, apparently the pain has finally gotten to her and she falls to the floor panting. But then, a young Misaki comes over to her, and reprimands her. Junko acknowledges her, saying that she has already told her to go away, though Misaki points out that it's because she runs away every time she says it. As she struggles on the floor, Misaki touches her forehead on Junko's, and then as she uses her powers to connect to her, Misaki is assaulted with throbbing pain. Misaki discovers that Junko is somehow able to endure a cluster headache and wonders how she had kept her sanity. Misaki thinks she could restrain it by using her brainwashing ability though is wary as she couldn't read any abnormality in the affected area. Despite this, Misaki risks it and syncs up with her, and with a touch of her remote the pain is all gone. All the pain Junko has gone through is gone, as Misaki leaves. Junko asks how she could repay her, to which Misaki says that she just owe her one. As she leaves, Junko wonders what her name was as she never told her.

In Misaki's thoughts however, she has become weary of the facility. Despite not wanting to be involved with anything outside of the Exterior Project but when she saw Junko, she couldn't just ignore her and ended up helping her. Misaki is wary of the way things are being run to create espers as if the researchers are doing something else alongside it. Misaki wonders what Clone Dolly, a facility meant to mass-produce geniuses, wants badly to create enough for them to warrant in destroying so many espers. Despite this, Misaki washes her hands of the matter.

Meanwhile, Ghost Girl sees all of the events transpiring before her. She wonders how she is able to see both Misaki's memories and events where she wasn't involved in, and wonders if it was Iruka's memories. Ghost Girl hypothesizes that it was because Iruka kissed Misaki causing moisture contact, which pulled out matching memories like some sort of Psychometry. As the Ghost Girl scrambles her brain over this, she suddenly realizes that she is up near the ceiling. Since she is only peaking in on memories, it would mean someone saw the scene from the ceiling, who was neither Misaki nor Iruka. With that, Ghost Girl wonders whose memories is she peaking into.

Somewhere, a little girl wakes up and a researcher monitoring her welcomes her back. The girl relates how she "went" to all sorts of places again which was fun for her. With that, their session is over, and the researcher says farewell, saying they'll see each other tomorrow. After she left, the little girl remarks how "Misaki-chan" is nice.
