Anime Look Back: Hunter x Hunter Episode 21-25 Summary

Episode 21: Gon confronts Illumi in front of everyone, telling him he doesn't have the right to be Killua's brother. He grabs Illumi's right arm, and breaks it. Instead of apologizing, Gon convinces Illumi to tell him where Killua is. He just wants to be Killua's friend, but Illumi doesn't think he should have any. Illumi says Gon is making it sound like Killua was kidnapped. Gon explains that Killua was manipulated by Illumi, the same as a kidnapping.

Netero interrupts their conversation, as the meeting also focuses on Killua's situation. Both Kurapika and Leorio defend Killua, but to no avail. Kurapika explains that Killua had been acting differently during his match. He believes that Illumi hypnotized Killua into killing others. Leorio adds that the attack happened during his match with Bodoro, making it possible that Killua was trying to help him. In other words, Leorio should be the one disqualified, not Killua. Netero tells them that these are mere speculations, and there were no clear signs of Manipulation.

During the match, it is clear that Bodoro had more experience, but when it came to combat ability, Leorio had the advantage. So why would Killua help Leorio? This was the point Netero tries to prove. Pokkle enters the conversation by questioning Kurapika's win against Hisoka. After Hisoka whispered something to him, he immediately admitted his defeat. Pokkle is wondering, what did Hisoka tell Kurapika? He wonders if there was some sort of bargain between Kurapika and Hisoka.

Kurapika refuses to tell anything, and if Pokkle considers Kurapika's win as strange, a victory by default would be equally strange. Gon interrupts all of them, saying that there's no need to question everyone's win. What only matters is that they have all passed. He believes that Killua would have passed, but unfortunately, he didn't. Once he rescues Killua, he will never let Illumi see Killua again. Illumi tries to touch Gon, but he becomes wary and backs away. Netero interrupts again, this time agreeing with Gon's statement about passing the exam. He gives Beans the signal to continue the orientation, starting with introducing the Hunter License. After that, Netero declares the seven examinees to be Hunters.

Outside, Gon confronts Illumi again. He continues to ask the Zoldyck to tell him where Killua is. Illumi tells him that taking Killua away is a bad idea. Kurapika and Leorio appear behind Gon, as they want to rescue Killua as well. Illumi finally gives in and tells them where Killua is. He is back home at Kukuroo Mountain. After Gon and his friends leave, Hisoka appears behind Illumi. All locals know where the Zoldycks live, so there's no harm if Gon knows it as well. Illumi now knows that Gon has incredible potential, that's why Hisoka waits for him to grow up, but that makes him more dangerous. Illumi thinks of killing Gon, but Hisoka warns him: if Illumi touches Gon, he will face the consequences.

Back to Gon and his friends, Leorio asks Kurapika if he knows where Kukuroo Mountain is. Even though he doesn't know where it is, they can still search for it online. Hanzo then bids them farewell, as he will go back to his country. Pokkle also leaves, and apologizes to Kurapika about before. Satotz gives Gon his Hunter License and tells him a story about a Hunter he used to know who would discover long forgotten ruins. He tells Gon that this extraordinary Hunter was Ging Freecss, and even he tried to find him, but couldn't. He longs to become a Hunter as amazing as Ging, and this makes Gon feel very good, even blush. Inside the building, Kurapika searches for Kukuroo Mountain. It is 3,722 meters high and located in the Republic of Padokea. Later that day, they set off to Killua's home and rescue him.

Episode 22: The party arrives at the Republic of Padokea where Killua and his family lives. The three gather information, and ride a tour bus. While traveling, Coco Loo describes Kukuroo Mountain and comments it's the home of Zoldyck Family. Upon arriving at the front gate, which is also known as the "Gate to Hades", Coco informs them that in order to enter they must pass through the small door besides the security checkpoint, adding that for all the people who entered, none came out alive. Hearing this, two punks taunt the guard who hands them the key and they enter through the small door, claiming they'll get a reward for taking pictures of the Zoldycks. Not long after, a huge furry hand throws their corpses outside the wall. All the tourists and Coco run in terror except for Gon, Kurapika and Leorio who are introduced to Zebro.

They learn that a beast named Mike kills intruders who enter beyond the gate, and only follows orders from the Zoldyck Family. Zebro refuses to give the key to them to abstain them from getting killed by Mike. Because of Kurapika, the group learns that Zebro isn't really a guard, but a cleaner of Mike's messes and the real entrance is the Huge Gate, also known as the testing gate and entering through this gate will avoid Mike from attacking them.

Leorio tries to open the gate with all his strength, but fails. After Leorio, Zebro demonstrates his strength and opens the first door that weighs two tons. Gon realizing he doesn't have the strength to open the door insists on borrowing the key from Zebro even though Kurapika and Leorio warn him against doing so. He won't listen, so Zebro speaks to one of the butlers by phone and lets Gon speak to him, but the butler refuses to believe them and hangs up the phone. Frustrated, Gon decides to climb the door using his Fishing Rod. His friends try to stop him, but Gon is too stubborn and won't give up. Zebro steps in once again and decides to accompany the three inside the huge door.

Upon entering through the door, Zebro calls on Mike. Seeing Mike's appearance the three seem powerless and scared. In spite of that, Gon insists on meeting Killua and having Zebro guide the way.

Episode 23: With the help of Zebro, Gon and his friends successfully opened the Testing Gate. They are then taken to the servant's quarters to stay there for a while. They meet Seaquant, a servant of the Zoldyck Family. After receiving insults from Seaquant, they are more determined to open the Testing Gate using their own strength. Zebro states that it will be possible with a little training. They agree to train and immediately start training. To their surprise, everything is weighed down an incredible amount of pounds, even an ordinary cup. Meanwhile, Kikyo and Kalluto visit Killua in his cell while he is being tortured by Milluki. His mother informs him that his friends are trying to open the gates, and is convinced that they will fail at opening the gate, while Killua says otherwise.

After days of hard training, Gon, Kurapika and Leorio successfully opened the Testing Gate. Zebro points towards the mountain which is the way to the mansion, and they head towards it. While walking, the three are stopped by a girl named Canary, the butlers' apprentice. She draws a line across the way, and if any of them cross it, she will beat them up. Gon makes countless tries, but to no avail. Canary wonders why he lets himself get beaten like that. Gon says to Canary that he just wants to see Killua. Canary is finally convinced after hearing Gon and as she pleads him to help Killua she is knocked out by Killua's mother, who was watching from the bushes with Kalluto. She thinks Canary has insulted the entire Zoldyck family. Kikyo then sees Gon and instantly recognizes him as Illumi told her about him. She delivers a message from Killua, telling them that he can't see them right now.

Episode 24: Kikyo delivers a message from Killua saying that he can't see his friends right now. In a flashback, a younger Killua is greeted by Illumi who inquires about his previous task. When Killua refuses to answer, Illumi leaves him. Killua is greeted by Canary, a new apprentice butler. One day, as Killua is about to eat an apple, Canary greets him again and introduces herself as an apprentice butler. Killua offers her the apple but she refuses, as she is a servant and he is her employer. Killua mentions that Canary is using Silent Gaits and he assumes that she learned it while growing up in Meteor City. He offers to teach her Rhythm Echo and demonstrates it for her. Canary senses that they are having intruders and faces them. The bounty hunters attack, yet Canary knocks them out one by one with little to no effort. The leader of the intruders attacks with his blades and successfully injures her. Canary utilizes Rhythm Echo to defeat him. Canary notices Zebro and asks him to clean up the mess and Mike appears before Seaquant. The Blacklist Hunter immediately surrenders himself as Canary walks away. Killua is disappointed that she already knew Rhythm Echo and asks her to be his friend. Canary knows that Kikyo is watching them so she refuses. Killua then runs off.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio tend to an unconscious Canary. Meanwhile, Killua gets whipped by his older brother Milluki. He accuses Killua of being too arrogant and Killua apologizes for stabbing his brother during his escape. The torture is cut short when Kikyo calls Milluki's phone, telling him that Killua's friends are near the butler's office. Milluki mocks Killua by asking their mother to drive them away. Killua pulls one of his chains and threatens to kill Milluki if they even touch his friends. Kikyo introduces herself and Kalluto. Gon asks why Killua can't see them and Kikyo replies that Killua entered solitary confinement on his own will. She suddenly begins talking to herself in haste and in worry.

Zeno enters the solitary confinement and tells Killua that he can leave. He easily breaks off the chains and tells Milluki that he is not sorry, but he does feel bad about stabbing him. Before Killua could leave, Zeno added that his father Silva wants to see him. Milluki throws a fit and accuses Zeno for spoiling Killua. Zeno explains that Killua is special and proceeds to ask about Killua's potential. Milluki calls him the most talented in Zoldyck history, like his mother suggests, but he thinks that Killua is mentally weak. He begins to praise himself and nag about his latest invention: a bomb-carrying mosquito that will explode once the mosquito bites its target. Zeno calls him a bright boy, but with a foolish nature. Kikyo continues talking and eventually, excuses herself. Gon asks her to tell Killua that they will stay. Shortly after asking Gon who he is, Kalluto follows his mother back into the mountain. Canary awakens and volunteers to take them to the butler's office where there is a phone which can contact the family.

Silva proceeds to talk to Killua, asking what sort of people his friends are. They talk to each other while Kikyo comes running back home. Silva asks Killua if he wants to see his friends. He explains that he and Killua are different and he didn't realize that until his son ran away. And so, he asks Killua one more time if he wants to see his friends. Killua says yes and Silva makes a deal with him: never betray his friends. He sets Killua free, but Kikyo stands in his way, saying that Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio already left. Killua dismisses his mother and leaves her being proud of him for glaring at her and feeling his killing intent. Kikyo confronts Silva in his room and blames him for setting Killua free when he is finally home. Silva believes that he will come home one day because Killua is his son.

Episode 25: After Silva, Killua's father, sets him free, he heads to the Butlers Quarters, the same place where Gon and the others are heading. While they are walking, a butler is seen talking to Kikyo. She is upset because this is the time that will determine if Killua is the next successor of the Zoldyck Family. Killua arrives at the quarters and orders Gotoh to call him just as Gon arrives. After awhile the three arrive at the quarters being welcomed by the Butlers.

Gotoh tells them that Killua is on his way. They play a game of coin guessing where they will need to guess which hand is Gotoh holding the coin. After some rounds, he gives some rules that if someone guesses the wrong answer, he will be out of the game. He also states that they only have three seconds to answer. If they exceed more than the time allotted, then they will kill Canary and if all of them fail, they will never see Killua again. Gotoh tosses a coin in the air, juggles it, and catches it with twice the speed as the last round. Leorio gives the wrong guess and eventually Kurapika as well.

The only one left is Gon. When Gotoh is about to toss the coin, Gon requests for a knife to cut his swollen eye in order to minimize the swelling to improve his vision. After that, Gotoh uses the same procedure by tossing the coin and catching it with amazing hand speed, but Gon is able to find the correct hand that contains the coin. In the final round, Gotoh and two other butlers join him, tossing the coin incredibly fast and adding multiple hands to increase the difficulty. Gotoh asks him which butler has the coin. Gon answers confidently and points out that the butler behind him has it. The butlers give the group a round of applause and apologize to them for the threats they made. They were only meant to be taken as a joke to make the game more lively and intense.

Killua enters the room and rejoins Gon, Kurapika and Leorio and bids farewell to the Butlers and Canary. Gotoh warns Gon that in the real world there will always be people not to trust. On the train they discuss stories about getting to the mansion. Killua asks Gon why he's not using his Hunter License. Gon explains he needs to pay the debts he has for the people who've helped him, including returning Hisoka's badge and then he will use his Hunter License. However, Gon doesn't know the location of Hisoka, but Kurapika admits he does, and reveals to his friends the message Hisoka whispered to him during their match in the Final Phase of the Hunter Exam.

He tells them that Hisoka will likely show up at Yorknew City, including the group who massacred the Kurta Clan, the Phantom Troupe. After the discussion, Kurapika bids farewell to his friends to look for a job as a Hunter, followed by Leorio who also bids goodbye to study and become a doctor, but before totally parting ways the group decides to meet on September 1st at Yorknew City. And so, the two decided to go to their next destination where they can train and at the same time earn money, in Heaven's Arena.
