Episode 26: On Whale Island we see a mail man delivering a mail to Aunt Mito while her Grandmother is watching in the back. She looks at the letter and begins reading it. In the letter, Gon asks her how she is doing, saying he is doing fine. Meanwhile we see her and her grandmother in their house reading the letter while drinking some hot cocoa. She is very excited to learn that Gon has passed the hunter exam but she is surprised to learn that he is not happy about that due to what happened at the final exam.
We then see a flashback of Hanzo fighting Gon in the finals and eventually forfeiting the match making Gon win his Hunter License. When Gon disagrees to winning this way Hanzo knocks him unconscious. As he wakes up, Satotz told him what had happened afterwards. It then shows the match between Gittarackur and Killua with Gittarackur revealing who he really is, his brother, Illumi, who goes on to tell Killua that he isn't supposed to be a hunter but a killer. Killua answers he doesn't want to be a hunter but he does want to be friends with Gon. Illumi replies back that, that is impossible since he has the soul of a killer. He then threatens to kill Gon if Killua doesn't fight him at which point Killua forfeits the match and loses. Next we see Killua kill Bodoro during his match with Leorio after which he leaves for home. Next we see the introduction for new hunters scene in which Gon demands Illumi to apologize to Killua breaking Illumi's wrist in the process and declaring he is going to save Killua.
Now the scene changes to Kukuroo Mountain and Gon telling that he went there with Leorio and Kurapika to get Killua back. We then see the three of them training with Zebro to open the Testing Gate which they succeed in after which they face off with the junior attendant Canary who knocks Gon around with her cane until he convinces her to let them pass as they do she is shot in the head by Killua's Mother Kikyo who is accompanied by her son Kalluto and the three of them have a verbal confrontation with her about Killua. Canary then wakes up and takes them to the butler's office where Gotoh the head butler plays a coin game with them threatening to kill Canary if they lose. Gon wins however at which point Killua arrives from the main mansion and they join up and leave. Again we see Mito and the grandmother sitting on the table reading Gon's letter, finding out there is one more piece of business he must take care of before returning home.
The scene now switches to the end of the Trick Tower exam and the beginning of the fourth phase of the Hunter Exam. We see the remaining candidates draw lots, the lots being explained, Gon and Killua on the boat showing each others lots, finding out Gon drew Hisoka, Gon training to get Hisoka's tag, Gon stalking Hisoka and getting his badge, being paralyzed by Geretta, Hisoka killing Geretta and returning his tag to Gon, Gon telling him he doesn't want to owe anyone and Hisoka telling him to return it to him when he is able to punch him in the face like he just did to him. Gon then recounts how frustrated he was about this and that he needs a way to do this and that before he has done that he can't return to Whale Island and that he is going to the Heaven's Arena with Killua in order to do this after which he tells her to take care and that he doesn't expect to be home soon.
Now for the last time we see Mito and Grandmother in their home and we see that Mito has framed the picture of Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio and that she hangs it on her wall next to a bunch of other photos. She then remarks while looking at a picture of Ging that he is really his son and asks it if he is looking over Gon.
Episode 27: Reaching their destination, the Heaven's Arena, Gon and Killua register for the tournament to earn money while training at the same time. In only a week, both reach the 100th floor of the tower. Killua tells Gon that he competed at Heaven's Arena when he was six years old. It took him two years to reach the 200th floor. He earned around 200,000,000 Jenny Currency Symbol that time, but he only spent it on snacks. Gon can't comprehend that many snacks in his mind.
They met another young fighter named Zushi, who is under the supervision of his master, Wing. Zushi proves himself to be a good fighter, but he is only on the 50th floor. Killua and Zushi's names are called to fight one another, and Killua confidently declares victory since Zushi can't even touch him. However, Zushi refuses to give up. He releases an aura, which reminds Killua of his brother Illumi. Wing shouts at Zushi, which quickly stops Zushi from using Nen.
After the fight, Killua overheard Zushi's conversation with Wing. The boy apologizes, stating he only did that because his opponent was so strong. He goes back to Gon and wonders what technique they are talking about. Gon suggests asking Zushi himself. Zushi tries to explain, but Gon and Killua do not understand a thing. Wing approaches them, and agrees to teach Gon and Killua a technique called Nen.
Episode 28: Wing teaches Gon, Killua and Zushi in his room. He explains the 4 main principles: Ten, Zetsu, Ren and Hatsu, or Focus, Express, Temper and Act, respectively. Wing tells Killua he'll think about killing him. He demonstrates Ten by focusing his body; Zetsu by saying the words "I'll kill you"; and Ren by giving off a strong aura of an intent to kill. Because of the strong pressure, Killua jumps back, hanging on the ceiling corner of the room. Wing advises them to train with Zushi and start mastering Ten, but Killua suggests that they should leave.
Killua reveals to Gon that Wing was lying all along. Back in the room, Wing notices Zushi's Ten is unstable. Zushi asks about the reason as to why Wing lied to them. Wing only said that for them to know what the other meaning of Nen is, Force. Wing rips out a page in a book and using Nen on it, easily slices a soda can in half. Wing's point is it's dangerous to teach Nen to people without caution.
After clearing the 190th floor, Gon and Killua advance to the 200th floor. They are stopped by a strong aura of a murderous intent which prevents them from moving forward. They barely get through it as the receptionist appears, stating that they need to register before midnight. Hisoka appears out of nowhere, in front of the two behind the receptionist, and warns them that they are not ready yet. He prevents Gon and Killua from progressing with powerful Nen. Wing appears behind them to stop them from hurting themselves and offers to teach them the real Nen. Before they leave, the receptionist informs Killua that if he isn't able to register at the given time, he will never be able to register again since he failed to register once before when he was younger. In Wing's room, Gon and Killua are finally taught the real Nen.
Episode 29: After the explanation of the danger of Nen further, Gon and Killua's aura nodes finally open thanks to Wing's help. He then proceeds to teach them how to pass through Hisoka's barrier of Nen. A few hours before midnight, Gon and Killua come back to the hallway that Hisoka is guarding. They successfully pass through his barrier and Gon challenges Hisoka to a fight. Hisoka replies that if Gon manages to win even one match, he will accept his challenge.
The two successfully register before time runs out. After registering, they are confronted by three fighters from the 200th floor named Gido, Sadaso, and Riehlvelt. The two leave and head towards Gon's room. A message appears on the television which reads Gon's match will be tomorrow. Killua seems worried for a moment until he sees Gon's excitement for the challenge. The next day, Gido and Gon face off in the arena. Gido launches his spinning tops he calls Battle Waltz. Gon was left defenseless in the middle of the ring.
Episode 30: As the battle between Gon and Gido continues, Gon struggles because of Gido's Nen tops. His Ten also gradually begins to fade. A hit from a top sends him outside the ring. Gon notices a top not attacking him outside the ring. He then understands that the tops simply attack anything getting in their way and gets an idea to attack Gido while ignoring the tops. But Gon fails because Gido uses another Nen ability called Tornado Top, which involves his whole body spinning like a top to improve his defense.
Due to Gon's willingness to fight, he conceals his presence without knowing it with Zetsu, one of the 4 main principles of Nen. Wing is amazed, but can't stop worrying about Gon's situation. As the fight resumes, Gon dodges all of Gido's tops for a certain period of time, but eventually is warned by Killua and ends up in a no-escape situation. He gets his arm broken and loses the match. Wing is upset with Gon's decision to fight so soon. He gives him a condition that he must not practice or study Nen until he is fully recovered. Wing wraps a "promise thread" on Gon's finger to remind him about it. Killua tells Wing how Gon felt during his match against Gido, explaining how Gon becomes too excited over new challenges. He adds if Wing quits teaching them, they'll manage to find a new teacher or learn Nen by themselves. However, Wing plans to continue teaching the two.
Meanwhile, Kurapika searches for a job and is tested by the Sengi Guild Agent who looks up employers for Hunters. She creates a skull laughing face and asks if Kurapika could see it. But he fails to see it because of his lack of knowledge about a certain technique. As he walks, a mysterious man passes him on the street and steals Kurapika's license without him noticing. The man later tosses a piece of stone towards Kurapika in a forest, which he dodges and it hits a part of a tree and destroys it. As Kurapika stands wonder struck, the man shows up and confronts him. He says that he cannot see it, but sense it approaching. Kurapika then gets angry and orders him to return his Hunter License.
The man dares Kurapika to get his license back from him. Later, Kurapika is seen down on both his knees, frustrated about his failure in retrieving his license. The mysterious man gives back his license, tells him his name, and says the real exam is about to begin.
