Episode 36: After Gon hits Hisoka in the face, the referee gives him a critical hit which brings the match score to 2-1, Gon. The announcer thinks Hisoka didn't feel Gon's attack and questions the referee's decision. Baka Ki El Dogra then appears out of nowhere and explains the reasons for the referee's decision. He states referees may give points based on what pleases them, some referees give points on the amount of damage done, while others from strategies and techniques. In the case of the referee who is handling Gon and Hisoka's match, he gives critical points to Gon due to him using the flagstone to hit Hisoka. Afterwards, Gon gives back Hisoka's number plate. Everyone is confused at the exchange.
Hisoka asks Gon about his Nen, and guesses that Gon is an Enhancer type. Hisoka talks about his way of using personalities to classify one's aura. As Hisoka states, based on his way of classifying auras due to their personality, Enhancers are simple and earnest; Transmuters, which Hisoka belongs to, are fickle and dishonest; Emitters are short-tempered; Specialists are independent; Conjurers are high-strung, and lastly, Manipulators are argumentative. Hisoka tells Gon that he and Hisoka are quite compatible since "opposing personalities attract" and they could become friends, but Hisoka warns Gon that since Transmuters are fickle, what was once treasure can become trash, so Hisoka warns Gon to not disappoint him. Hisoka hits Gon using his elbow and continues attacking Gon while Gon defends. Gon uses Gyo, and sees Hisoka's Bungee Gum attached to Gon's cheek. Hisoka uses his Bungee Gum to pull Gon towards him and delivers a punch that knocks Gon down. The referee gives Hisoka a critical hit and a knockdown, making the score 6-2, Hisoka.
Gon gets back on his feet and Hisoka tells him he will give him a free hit if he can answer his question. Hisoka asks when did he attach his Bungee Gum to Gon's cheek and gives him 3 choices. Gon answers immediately and chooses no. 3. He is wrong, because no. 4 was the real answer; Hisoka attached the Bungee Gum to him during his personality analysis. As the battle continues, Gon runs towards Hisoka and lands a punch to his face. Hisoka then becomes absorbed in thought and excitement, allowing Gon to keep punching his face. During this period, Hisoka enters an orgasmic-like state at the thought of Gon becoming stronger and realizing his potential. Not before long, he snaps out of it and counters Gon's assault with a punch to Gon. Hisoka pulls Gon by the Bungee Gum and punches him again, but Gon blocks his attack, but still is stunned a bit. The referee gives critical points to both fighters, but gives Hisoka an extra knock down point, which Gon complains that he was never down. The referee stands by his decision and the crowd also questions the referee as they begin to boo. The score changes to 9-4 in favor of Hisoka. Hisoka tricks Gon by making him look to his right and a large stone hits Gon, resulting in knockdown points which gives Hisoka the victory.
Hisoka, while leaving the arena, tells Gon that he has made a lot of progress, but still lacks experience. If he can win 10 more fights, he can stand a chance in Heaven's Arena. However, Hisoka tells Gon that he has no intention of fighting him again in Heaven's Arena, instead he wants to fight him in the real world where their lives are at stake. Gon wants to train hard in order to fight and beat Hisoka. After the fight, the referee explains his decisions during the match of Gon and Hisoka. He explains he gave Hisoka an edge because he didn't want Gon to die in the arena. Gon and Killua bid farewell to Wing and Zushi. The two decide to visit Gon's Aunt Mito on Whale Island, so they finally bid farewell to Heaven's Arena.
Episode 37: Gon travels back home to Whale Island along with Killua. Upon arriving, he meets his Aunt outside their house and embraces her. Mito also greets Killua and then invites the two inside their house.
Before preparing the meal, Mito asks Gon and Killua to take a bath. The two follow and clean themselves. After taking a bath, the meal is prepared and they have a great feast. While eating, Gon, his Aunt and Grandmother give thanks for the food they have and Killua wonders what they are doing.
After filling their stomachs, Gon and Killua step outside and roam the forest of Whale Island. At night, the two chat by a bonfire they made. Killua asks Gon what he'll do now and Gon replies he'll stay home for a while before going to Yorknew City and gather information about his father. Killua admires Gon for having a goal in his life. He comments he doesn't have any goals, but wishes he did like Gon. The two talk about their friendship until Gon suggests to Killua that they travel the world together while he searches for his dad and Killua discovers the thing he wants to do. Killua asks about Gon's mom, but Gon tells him that he doesn't know anything about his real mom and the only mom he wants is Aunt Mito. Mito has been standing behind a bush with food the whole time and begins to cry out of happiness after hearing this.
Back home, Gon tells Mito that he will stay for a month then he'll look for his father. Mito shows Gon a small box which his father gave him and she tells him everything she knows about Ging. She tells him Gon was the same age as Ging when he left Whale Island to become a Hunter. In the middle of the conversation, Gon's grandmother steps in and confesses that right after Ging left the island, Mito's parents were the ones who really died in a car accident, not Gon's parents.
Ten years after leaving, Ging came back carrying Gon and asked his grandma to take care of him. When Mito asked Ging about Gon's mother, Ging replied that they separated. Grandmother also added Mito's silly reactions. After learning about his dad, Gon starts calling his father by his first name, "Ging" and wants to learn more about him. Mito tells him when her and Ging were young they were the only children around. Grandmother tells how Mito and Ging would always play, and how Mito would always get lost. Mito once followed Ging into the mountains and got lost, panicking the whole village. Only Ging was able to find her because of their close bond and her hiding place that only he knew. Obviously Mito is mortified by this whole story.
The next morning, Gon and Killua have trouble opening the small box from Ging. Killua suggests using Nen on the box and the metal protecting the box falls off and another is under it. A slot for the Hunter License is found and they are able to open the second one too. Inside the box contains a ring, a memory card and a cassette tape. Gon decides to listen to the tape first. While playing the tape, Ging's voice is heard and he asks Gon if he wants to see him.
Episode 38: While playing the cassette tape, Gon hears his father's voice for the first time. Ging congratulates Gon on becoming a Hunter and asks him if he wants to see him, giving him two choices. If he wants to see him, just continue listening and if not, just press the stop button. Gon continues to listen when Ging follows by saying if he is only slightly interested in seeing him, stop listening. Ging gives Gon a minute to decide.
Gon listens until Ging's voice says Gon must want to see him, but he doesn't want to see Gon, saying he is a bad person for choosing his own desire instead of being a parent. Ging figures it's been at least ten years since he recorded the tape and even so is still the same person: selfish. As Gon and Killua listen to the tape, Ging is seen riding on the top of two unknown creatures. He continues to speak, telling Gon that he is doing reckless things and if Gon wants to find him, he will make it as difficult as possible.
After hearing those words, Gon is pumped up and more eager than ever. Killua is about to turn off the cassette, but Gon stops him, stating that there is still more. Ging then asks Gon if he wants to hear his mother's voice, but Gon stops the cassette quickly and tells Killua that his mom is Mito. After the two are done listening to the tape, an aura appears around the tape player. Nen was used on the cassette tape, making it rewind and then record, even though Gon pulls out the switch of the cassette and Killua tries to break it and, the cassette continues to move and erases Ging's voice.
Killua explains Ging used Nen to erase his voice to make it harder for Gon to find him. The two move on to the box again and look at the memory card. Killua decides to buy a game console at the online website ToyLand so they can use the memory card. After Killua buys the console, they insert the memory card and learn that a game is saved on it called Greed Island. They discover the game is incredibly expensive, adding up to more than 5 billion Jenny Currency Symbol. It is very rare as well and they get no help online trying to track it down. Killua calls his brother Milluki to learn more about the game and Milluki has two leads. Killua promises to trade a copied version of the memory card to Milluki for the information. He tells Gon a rumor that a dozen copies of the game will be distributed at the Southernpiece Auction. Gon and Killua bid farewell to Mito and his Great Grandmother, and the two head toward their next destination, Yorknew City.
Episode 39: As Gon and Killua leave Whale Island, Kurapika tries looking for a job before setting out to avenge his comrades. He approaches the Hunter Agency, but the woman inside refuses, as Kurapika lacked something else. She uses Nen, to test if he can see it, but when it's obvious he can't, the Agent suggests Kurapika should come back once he learns. In the forest, someone attacks him and introduces himself as Mizuken. He challenges Kurapika in a fight, but he loses. He tells Kurapika to come with him, as Mizuken is willing to be his teacher.
After some training of Nen, Mizuken tests Kurapika with Water Divination in order to learn which category does Kurapika's aura belong. Kurapika then uses Ren and something forms inside the glass. Mizuken confirms that Kurapika is a Conjurer. He then rates his ability to learn other Nen types: Conjurer is 100%, Enhancer is 60%, Transmuter is 80%, Emitter is 40%, Manipulator is 60%, and Specialist is 0%.
Kurapika leaves Mizuken after learning Nen and comes back to the Sengi Agency to find a job. The agent finally accepts Kurapika and lets him choose which employer he wants to work for. He chooses the one who collects human trophies. He leaves the agency after his decision, and crosses paths with Melody, who hears his unstable heartbeat. In the Sengi Agency, Melody is seen talking with the same agent Kurapika talked to. Melody requests for an employer who has connections with the Yorknew City Underground Auction on September 1st.
Meanwhile, a young lady is seen escorting her employer. They are suddenly confronted by four men, who mockingly comment that a lady isn't fit for being a bodyguard. Baise, the woman, kisses the leader all of a sudden with her Nen ability, Instant Lover, and orders him to attack his companions. The employer, afraid of Baise's Nen ability, runs off. She lets him leave, and thinks to herself that she needs to find a new job. In another place, a man is standing on top of a building writing a haiku. He is then approached by police officers who order him to return the corpse samples that he stole. The man, Basho, attacks the police and continues writing his haiku.
In a garden, Squala talks with his girlfriend Eliza on his cell phone, while surrounded by lots of dogs. Kurapika arrives in front of the mansion's gate and he is welcomed by the butler. The butler takes him to a room, where other bodyguards are waiting. Now that everyone is present, the butler turns on a video of Dalzollene, the main bodyguard and he explains the requirements. There's only one month before the auction begins and the bodyguards will be qualified if they successfully retrieve the sample they are assigned to get. After drawing lots, the bodyguards try to exit through the door, but it won't open. They are suddenly attacked by men who wear black clothes and use swords as weapons. Kurapika then prepares his chains for battle.
Episode 40: In order to escape the mansion, Kurapika and the others must fight the mysterious assailants. In the middle of the fight, Kurapika tries to dodge, as Basho lands a punch on one of the assailants, and senses something strange about them. Kurapika watches the others fighting the ninjas from the top of a chandelier and jumps towards one of his fellow applicants, pointing a dagger to him. He threatens him to stop his shadow puppets within the count of three. Before Kurapika finishes counting, Shachmono Tocino finally stops his ability as Basho says that all of their opponents being controlled by Tocino are just made of Nen and he didn't feel something after he punched one of them. He questions Kurapika on how he found it out and Kurapika explains that when he watched above, he noticed that Tocino was the only one not being attacked by the puppets, adding they only had simple attacks and the assailants are only being instructed to attack the nearest targets.
Once busted, Shachmono quickly reveals that he is working for their boss and was being instructed by him to test their skills. Tocino states that four can escape the mansion; Kurapika and the others suspect that there is another cohort, and so in order to determine who the other one is, Kurapika uses his Dowsing Chain. He points his chain to each of the applicants and the chain reacts when it points to Squala. Squala isn't convinced by the Dowsing Chain, but Melody explains that his heartbeat changed rapidly when the chain was pointed at him and explains more about one's heartbeat and state of mind. It sounds to Melody like a typical liar, but Squala is too stubborn to give up and accuses that he can't trust Kurapika and probably the two of them are working together. Basho uses his technique called Great Haikuist. After he writes words from the scroll that has to do with a chair if it is ever touched by Basho's hand will burn, and Basho demonstrates his ability.
After Basho's demonstration, he takes another scroll and writes that if a person answers his question untruthfully, they will be burned. As Basho questions each applicant whether they are a cohort or not, everyone denies, and when Squala is being questioned, he finally gives up and admits that he is the other cohort. After he introduces himself, he threatens them that even if he was caught they still wouldn't be able to get out of the mansion alive and refuses to tell them the order even if they torture him. Baise approaches Squala and kisses him, taking control of him by using her ability called Instant Lover, making Squala reveal the whole plan.
Meanwhile, Milluki receives the memory card from Killua and starts deciphering the data. He also sends the URL of the Hunter-only website to Killua via an eagle. Gon and Killua are about to arrive at Yorknew City and are two weeks away from meeting Leorio and Kurapika. The two will also gather information about Greed Island and in the middle of their conversation, the message containing the URL arrives.
